Manhattan Drink Recipe
Ingredients:
2 oz. Rye Whiskey
1 oz. Sweet Vermouth
Angostura Bitters (2-3 dashes)
Lemon Peel
Ice
History:
The Manhattan has been around for quite a bit of time, dating back to the late 1800’s. Like many cocktails that have been around for that long, the origin story isn’t exactly a concrete one, but what we can say with obvious certainty, was that it was created in New York City.
Legend says it first appeared at the Manhattan Club in, where else but Manhattan, NYC. It’s also said it was innovated to celebrate a special event, rumored to be a banquet held by the mother of Winston Churchill.
At it’s most classic, Manhattans are made with Rye, Vermouth, and bitters, stirred with ice (cover your ears Mr. Bond), and then strained into a martini glass. Bourbon has become an almost equally popular option today, thanks to the booming industry.
From its early start in the Big Apple and the association with sophistication and the glamour of the big city, the Manhattan weaved its way through th clubs and bars of America and is still a staple of every mixologists repertoire, as the Manhattan has given way to a variety of derivative cocktails.
As ritzy bars continue to grow across the USA, the Manhattan has seen a resurgence alongside the likes of Old Fashioneds, Negronis, and so many other classics of the cocktail world.
