It’s been a few years since I read 1776. Maybe more than a few at this point, but I can honestly say I may never need to read it again because I still talk about ninety percent of everything I read in David McCullough’s masterpiece. For the American History buff, there is no better book to add to your library than this one.
David McCullough is an expert at taking, what most would initially consider to be an excess of painstaking detail, and intertwining it into an easy to follow timeline, an organized method, and ultimately, a well-paced, page-turning story.
I’ll share one brief anecdote to give you an idea of the types of facts and accounts McCullough provides. When George Washington and the continental army were preparing to cross the Delaware on Christmas Day, spies caught wind of this plan, and a note was delivered to one of the Hessian generals on Christmas Eve. As would many a soldier be doing on this evening, the general was enjoying food and drink with other members of the Redcoat army, and without even checking the note, slid it into his coat pocket. Early the following day - Christmas morning, Washington and his troops attacked in what would end up a decisive victory and a momentum turn for the tide of the Revolutionary War.
If that little bit was interesting to you, just wait until you read the entire thing.
